For the event, six drivers entered utilizing SRS power including S3 driver Nick Lucido, S4 drivers Chris Jennings and Mike Jones, as well as drivers in the S5 junior category Jake French, Devin Mauk and rookie, Marcus Payne.
The weekend started out brilliantly in qualifying as S5 drivers Jake French and Devin Mauk who made their intentions perfectly clear to the field of junior drivers they meant business, taking pole position and second position respectively with both drivers half a second clear of the entire field. SRS rookie driver Marcus Payne who was attending his first Supernationals would qualify 12th as he came to grips with the demands of high level national competition.
In the S4 category the results of SRS power were equally dominant as Mike Jones timed in on pole position with Chris Jennings hot on his tale taking the outside front row starting positions only .14 second behind.
Unfortunately for Lucido this was the end of the good news as Las Vegas notorious lady luck went on holiday. A strew of temp. course related crashes, shunts, and ‘racing incidents’ crumbled his hopes for a good result and he had to settle with a top five qualifying result as the best news for the weekend.
For the other SRS drivers Lucido seemed to bear the weight of the bad luck as Jennings and Jones went to work on the S4 field. After Jones captured pole position during qualifying, Jennings was quick to redeem himself fighting hard, capturing the overall S4 class victory. While it cannot be said that it was due to a lack of trying Jones was forced to be content with swapping positions with Jennings in the final and took the second step on the S4 podium.
In the S5 category Jake French put on a clinic for all of those willing to watch along with the entire S5 field that did not have a choice in the matter. After qualifying on pole position by .4 tenths of a second over fellow SRS driver Mauk, French went on to stamp his authority on the field collecting the heat race wins. Just a tick off French’s pace Mauk drove a smart event handily clearing the remainder of the field giving SRS 1-2 finishes through the heats. What all considered the final race to be a formality a twist of fate turned it into anything but. Early in the race lady luck reared her ugly head and the dominant French would find himself at the right place at the wrong time. One of the infamous temp. circuit gremlins misplaced a barrier which collected the kart of French who was the next driver through. After the barrier did its job of absorbing the impact and lead, French was forced to retire while leading the race. Mauk had raced consistently all weekend would be the beneficiary, picking p the pieces and giving SRS power the second Super Nationals win of the weekend. Marcus Payne delivered progressive results moving up in the field to finish seventh overall a testament to his determination and hard work.
At the end of the weekend SRS powered drivers results speak for themselves. With a total of six drivers entered five SRS driver managed to qualify in the top five in their field, two of which were pole positions. When the chequered flag fell on the event, of those six SRS powered drivers three managed to collect podium results while two drivers took home the jackpot the overall class victory. |
